Wednesday, 2 April

Left Canberra just after 10am and stopped at Bungendore to look at an art and craft/woodwork outlet and had a coffee and scone at their café.  Stopped at the bakery in Braidwood for lunch and then briefly about 1pm in Batemans Bay for petrol before heading down the coast.  Stopped at Narooma where we walked out to the Bar Rock Lookout which overlooks the harbour entrance.  Strong wind blowing off the sea so didn’t stay very long.  We stopped for 40 minutes or so at Central Tilba, an old gold mining town and then on to Bermagui where we followed the coast road down to Merimbula, arriving at the Sapphire Inn Motel shortly after 5pm.  Good location with good facilities but completely full as Victoria has school holidays and apparently many come here for their holidays.

Beautiful wide golden sand beaches down the coast today.

Dinner was two stir fry dishes at a popular little Thai restaurant.

Weather was fine and cloudy with wind in some areas.

Thursday, 3 April.

Drove down the coast to Pambula then on to view the Pinnacles in Ben Boyd National Park (close to a sandy beach near the sea) – colours were great.

Drove back up to Wheelers Oyster Farm for a tour – an interesting talk about how they grow their oysters followed by samples for oysters cooked three different ways and a la natural.

Drove down further to Eden – had a quick lunch there then after driving further south we drove 20 km down a pot holy dirt road in the Ben Boyd National Park to view the lighthouse at Green Cape.  Close to the end of the road was a viewpoint for viewing Disaster Bay.

On our way back to Merimbula we drove down to Haycock Point to view the beach at the end of the road – a kangaroo was eating in the reserve.  Stopped off at Pambula to have a quick look at a couple of craft shops then drove to the Aquarium & Wharf Restaurant to see what they offered before driving back to our motel.

Had a good complementary meal at the local Bowling Club – included in the motel package.

Weather was a bit cloudy first thing but lovely the rest of the day.

Friday, 4 April

Up at 7.30, breakfast at 8.  Cereal followed by bacon, eggs, and tomatoes.

About 10am went for a walk down through the town and around the boardwalk along the north side of Merimbula Lake (actually a salt water inlet full of oyster farms.  Beautiful clear blue water and a great boardwalk, about 1.5 metres wide, no side railing, and up to 0.5 metres above the water.  Lots of bellbirds in the trees.

Lunch in our motel unit, cracker biscuits with avocado, cheese, and tomato, and orange juice.

Casual afternoon with A doing some washing and then shopping (how unusual) as she needed to find some warmer clothing.  G drove to a self service car wash to get rid of all the dust and mud the car had accumulated.

Dinner at Santa Fe restaurant (25% discount) with a complimentary bottle of Hunter Valley red wine given to us by the motel.  G had a pizza (yummy slim base) and A chose to have some ingredients given to her so she could make up her own tortillas.

Lovely day, no cloud or wind this morning but a bit of cloud and a couple of very light showers mid afternoon.
